Thinking Day Bronze Award project May 12, 2010

On February 19, Fairmont Troop 30213 helped celebrate World Thinking Day with 145 Girl Scouts in their service unit. For their Bronze Award, as Girl Scout Juniors, they hosted a Thinking Day celebration and taught their peers about their sister Girl Guides in Swaziland, Africa, by performing a skit showing the differences between rural and urban life in the country.

.

They taught the girls about the customs of the Girl Guides in Swaziland. Then the Girl Scouts traveled through various stations so they could learn about the SiSwati language, foods, and crafts.

.

To give back to the country they had learned so much about, they asked the girls who attended to help them raise a mile of pennies. In the end, they raised just about 1/3 of a mile of pennies and were able to donate $250 for the Girl Guides of Swaziland.

On Sunday, August 30, Girl Scouts, along with Operation Christmas Child, hosted a garden tour with master gardener Jane Horn. Jane’s garden is in Prior Lake. It was absolutely beautiful. Jane gave her talk so that it included all the information for Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors to earn a badge and for Cadette and above to be well on their way to an interest patch. Admission to the event was a donation of school supplies to be used at the Girl Scouts box packing party in October or early November.

Kristine DCamp, leader of Troop 21594 had 4 girls from her troop.  Luanne Anderson leader of Troops 10519 – 2 girls; 10651 – 3 girls; and 11202 – 2 girls.

Jane, the master gardener, was a girl scout herself.  She wore her Girl Scout pins from when she was a girl. The girls that attended thought it was really great that she still had her pins and so proudly wore them.

CapsOff-Troop10651

The Prairie Star Service Unit had a dance on April 24 and sent out a flier troops introducing the Caps Off with Girl Scouts project. The timing for the project and the dance was perfect. The response was amazing. Caps just kept showing up. In all, they collected 8,324 caps. They were brought to the Brooklyn Service Center Monday on April 27.  One cap seemed like such a small thing to collect that the girls almost didn’t want to do it. But as you can see from the photo, if the girls all work together, we really can make a difference. This was an eye opening project for everyone involved.

Troop 13739 celebrates their success in collecting more than 3,000 caps for Caps Off with Girl Scouts. Not only did the third grade girls collect these on an individual basis, they also partnered with their school and fellow students at Gleason Lake Elementary in Wayzata, Minn., to raise awareness and participation in the program.

The girls made posters to educate and promote the program at school and had announcements made during the lunch hour. Fellow students were encouraged to recycle the caps from their water bottles at lunchtime as well as collect caps at home and deposit them in the Caps Off buckets placed in the cafeteria and main lobby of the school.

Girl Scout Brownie Troop 52970 (Woodbury Service Unit) created and performed a puppet skit as part of a presentation for staff at their school (Harambee Environmental Science and Community Cultures School in Maplewood). They asked that the school implement the Aveda Cap Recycling program on a permanent basis. They want to educate students and families about what is happening with caps that end up in landfills, rivers, and oceans. They will use designated proceeds from Cookies 4 a Change to create a display and collection bin in the school lobby. The girls are also preparing an interactive display for the upcoming school science fair as an effort to spread the word to everyone. Their presentation was a hit with staff and their proposal has been approved.

Rochester Girl Scout Brownie Troop 40392 collected shoes to send to Afghanistan, where many families have a difficult time providing shoes for all their members. Much of their footwear is tattered, ill-fitting, and worn, as reported by troop member Rebecca’s uncle, a nurse stationed in Afghanistan.

The troop reached out to the community to collect shoes to send overseas as the service project component of the Take Action Key in their Brownie Quest. They called their project Operation Cozy Toes. Below are pictures of some of the families who received the girls’ donations.

Third grade Forest Lake Girl Scout Troop 52804 organized a coat drive for their entire school, Scandia Elementary, to benefit the Tubman Family Alliance, a family violence prevention and intervention resource agency. Since the girls aren’t old enough to work on their Girl Scout Bronze Award, they are working toward a Try-It and fun patch.

.

The girls made three announcements on SENN (Scandia Elementary News Network), a broadcast held daily at school to promote their drive. They also sent home fliers with every student, and some of the girls went door-to-door with their parents to collect the items.

.

They made three fleece blankets, collected 78 coats, four cell phones, and a number of hats, mittens, scarves, boots, and snow pants.

Girl Scout Troop 10075, 5th graders from Chanhassen and Victoria, earned their Bronze Award this year by volunteering with Cornerstone Women’s Shelter. They coordinated a drive for pajamas and shoes in the winter, planned and provided dinner for the families and staff, and held a carnival for the kids while the mothers attended a meeting. The girls learned about event planning, scheduling, budgeting, and what constitutes a healthy relationship while experiencing the joy of volunteering.
